Careers Advice, Work Placements & Recruitment
Careers Advice and Mentoring
One of the most valuable contributions anyone can make is to volunteer their time. At Brunel we are particularly keen to give our students the best possible advice in pursuing their careers, to ensure that they make choices suitable to them and end up in jobs that they find genuinely fulfilling.
The Careers Service operates a system whereby students and recent graduates can get advice on possible careers from a professional counsellor, who will sometimes put them in touch with alumni willing to share their experiences in a particular area. Contact with alumni can range from a quick phonecall outlining their experiences in the engineering industry (for instance), to a more in-depth relationship where the alumni becomes a mentor for the student's fledgling career.
If you would like to offer careers advice, on whatever level, to Brunel University students and alumni, please click here to contact the alumni office.
Work Placements
Part of what makes Brunel University special is the high importance it places on the employability of its students. Brunel likes to think of itself as nurturing talent at work. One of the ways we go about this is by encouraging students to take up work placements as part of their course. In order to do this our Placements Service needs a ready supply of employers willing to take on a placement student. They get the benefit of your expertise and real experience of work, which will be invaluable once they enter the job market. You get a bright, motivated, enthusiastic employee who will not only grow in your company, but also will add something to it as well.
If your company is able to offer work placements to Brunel students, please click here to contact the alumni office and we will be happy to set up a meeting with our Placements office.
Recruitment
The Careers Service runs a number of recruitment events throughout the year and are always interested in hearing from potential exhibitors. Please see the Careers Service website for more details: http://people.brunel.ac.uk/~careers/
The Job Shop – Recruiting current students for your part-time and vacation jobs
If you have a part-time or vacation opportunity at your place of work, we would be pleased to advertise it for you, at no charge, in the Job Shop.
An increasing number of students are having to find temporary/part-time work in order to finance their time at university. As you will know from your time here, we have a reservoir of talented students, many with previous skills gained before or during their time at university. Brunel students are flexible, adaptable, enthusiastic and can undertake high levels of responsibility. Many are equipped with a range of transferable employability skills including interpersonal, communication, problem solving, team working, language and IT skills. Our students can therefore be considered for many opportunities you have to offer within your department including Clerical & Administrative work, Computer Programming, Database Management, Manual Labour, Market Research, Web Design - the list is endless.
Students have to fit part-time work in and around their study commitments. There is no limit to the hours that can be offered to students during vacations, however during term time we recommend (along with the National Union of Students and The National Association of Student Employment Services ) that students work a maximum of 15 hours per week.
